Most of us associate the word dashboard with something like this:

Whether it’s a grand marque car or a more mundane vehicle, the word dashboard is most often associated with driving a vehicle of sorts.

In anything related to computers and software, the word dashboard relates to a graphical presentation of a particular status.

Dashboards provide IT and information systems management an interface that is easy-to-read, usually a single page real-time view or snapshot of key performance indicators within the system. They enable instantaneous and informed decisions to be made at a glance. GUI’s (graphical user interface) allow users to interact and adjust the system according to what is seen.

Digital dashboards allow administrators and operators to monitor systems contribution toward the various departments of their organization. By capturing and reporting specific data points or sets, a dashboard provides a snapshot of performance.

Benefits include:

  • Gain total visibility of all systems instantly
  • Visual presentation of performance measures
  • Ability to identify and correct negative trends
  • Measuring efficiencies and inefficiencies

In turn, these metrics lead to:

  • Ability to generate detailed reports showing new trends
  • Ability to make more informed decisions based on collected business intelligence
  • Align strategies and organizational goals
  • Saves time compared to running multiple reports
  • Quick identification of data outliers and correlations

     

System Center Dashboards and OpsLogix Oracle MP Dashboards

System Center 2007 R2 brought the System Center community the ability to transform original System Center GUI views into dashboards. You can read the first 2011 official blog article on it on TechNet:

System Center 2012 SP1 and R2 further expand on this technology by adding dashboard widgets. A widget is a combination of a user interface control (e.g. a grid or chart) and a data provider (which defines what data to retrieve).

The OpsLogix development team played around with widgets and created the Hello Kitty dashboard. A couple of useful links in the System Center community about dashboards:

Brad Anderson, Microsoft’s corporate vice president in the Cloud and Enterprise group, comments on dashboards in System Center in a 2013 TechNet article about data visualization and dashboards:

“One of the most important things an IT department can do for itself is demonstrate its value to business leaders clearly and regularly. The easiest way to do this is with a dynamic, real-time dashboard view of the IT operation.

The bad news is that accurate, functional, and responsive dashboards have historically been difficult to produce, as well as lacking the features necessary to show the range of services, solutions, and operations at work behind the scenes. The good news is that System Center Operations Manager 2012 Dashboards is a huge leap forward –”

Technically “the bad news” translates into issues with specifically, the performance widget. Something OpsLogix discovered with its first forays into capacity management in 2012.

As Brad’s comment indicates, it’s important to remember that Microsoft is aware of the issues which mean a fix is inevitably forthcoming.

In the meantime OpsLogix has found a workaround that will enable accurate dashboards in the OpsLogix Oracle MP.

OpsLogix welcomes you to try out the dashboards for the OpsLogix Oracle MP. The article will enable you to utilize the dashboard.mpb to full affect however, the “FIX” method entails some SQL developer knowledge and a tweak in the Microsoft.SystemCenter.Visualization.Library.

When using the TOPnWidgetFix it is very important to remember Michel’s (OpsLogix senior developer) stance on the matter:

Using this task is totally unsupported. But in my opinion the negative impact is very low compared to the positive impact because this stored procedure is only used for reading data and not changing it so it wouldn’t impact the DB with incorrect data (except for some SQL performance penalty for the use of the like statement).
